7 DAYS - PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP in HAVANA&TRINIDAD In our workshop HAVANA & TRINIDAD we share our time between Havana, the pulsating capital of Cuba, and Trinidad, a distinctive colonial city on the south coast of the country. We will experience the rich and colourful culture and the true life in Cuba; we will meet the locals, visit the people in their homes, spend time with them and hear their stories. We do various tours, photo walks or vintage car tours or a tour to a tobacco company, or we visit a modern dance group in Havana. We will lead you to the most inspiring places in the best light of day. The workshop focuses entirely on photography and you will experience the real Cuba and visualise it with your photography. You can expect to have incredible opportunities for portrait, street and cultural photography.

We spend the night in cosy and comfortable Casas Particulares, typical Cuban guesthouses, where we enjoy Cubans warm hospitality. All rooms have private bathrooms. In the breaks we will use the time to select and edit our pictures and plan our next photo sessions with  competent support and teaching.

Cuba is not just unique, but one of the most rewarding photographic and cultural experiences you will ever encounter. Because Cuba is so different it requires an open-minded and rewarding sense of adventure. Prepare yourself to be completely wowed.

All Levels

This workshop is open to photographers at all levels who are basically technically self-sufficient, and passionate about improving their image making, in a mindful approach.
Participants should be in good health as days in the field can be long and participants should be prepared to be on their feet walking three or four hours at a time, while photographing


We require all attending photographers to bring their own cameras (and 1-2 lenses) plus support gear (memory cards, extra batteries, charger, card reader, external hard drive, power adapter, small photo bag, pocket torch, lightweight tripod) We also encourage you to bring your laptop to download your images for review & positive criticism and to edit the images in the postproduction process.

Participants on a daily basis, or one-to one teaching

If you prefer to participate on a daily basis, the basic day fee is 495,- $, without accommodation. Depending of the class and the individual activities, additional fees will compline. As well, if you’re interested in one-to-one teaching lessons, please enquire for availability and possible special arrangements.

Participants make their own air travel arrangements
to arrive in Havana in time.
Once the trip is confirmed, travel details, suggestions,
and tips to help participants travel to Cuba are provided.

*Visas can be purchased at the airport
before departure from your air carrier.

*Visitors to Cuba must also have
proof of valid medical insurance.

Throughout the trip, your tutor will be at your side with advice and assistance. As we travel in a small group, you will receive very personal instruction to ensure that it is suitable for your level, and we can respond spontaneously to individual requests as they arise. You can expect to learn how to work with light, how to compose compelling and complex images, and how to deal with people. You tutor will explain his photographic vision and help you to find and develop your own.

We are on the road all day, but in the evening you have the opportunity to revise and analyse your new images, and on our last day we make a final selection and image editing and present the images to the group to review and discuss our experiences.

*All prices are per person and based on double occupancy. For single room occupancy additional 350,-$ apply. For your convenience, we offer optional early arrival and late departure accommodations so you can extend your stay before or after the trip.

**Any non-photographer (spouse, friend or significant other) who wishes to come along is counted as a participant and as such must pay his/her way. However, we offer a 25% trip discount to any non-photographer.

We will explorer over 4 days the vibrant live and culture of HAVANA and transfer then to TRINIDAD, the enchanting colonial city on the south coast of the country. We’ll spend 2 days in Trinidad, returning on our 7th day to Havana again.

Get to know each other

You will be picked up on arrival at José Martí International Airport in Havana and transferred to our accommodation. We stay in cosy and comfortable Casas Particulares, typical Cuban guesthouses, where we enjoy Cubans warm hospitality. All rooms have private bathrooms.

In the breaks we will use the time to select and edit our pictures and plan our next photo sessions with your tutors competent support and teaching.

After the settling in we meet for the first time in the group and go through your equipment and discuss the basic techniques and the conception of our masterclass. 

Afterwards we go to dinner where everyone can get to know each other.

Havana Heritage

How to instil a powerful narrative in your picture

We start our first photo walk in Havana Vieja, the most authentic and visually impressive part of the city.

There we visit the four main squares of La Habana Vieja; Plaza de La Catedral, Plaza de San Francisco de Assis, Plaza de las Armas and Plaza Vieja.

You will  photo walk through the streets, and we enter houses, workshops and shops on our way.

Afterwards we depart in these beautifully restored classic cars for a drive through Havana, and coming back to the center, to the lively Neptuno street, where we continue our photo walk in direction to the Malecòn, for the sunset.

Time to explore Havana’s vibrant nightlife, and make new Cuban friends.

Photo Tour 

How to enhance the drama by working with strong compositions lines

We enjoy an early morning Photo Tour through Vibora, the highest point of Havana, walking down through the bustling with life at the Calle 10 de Octubre, full with exciting photographic opportunities.

We take ferry across Havana bay to Regla. Regla is situated on the southeastern shore of La Habana Bay, with its foundries, petroleum refineries, shipyards, docks, and warehouses.

In Regla we’ll be picked up in vintage American Classic Cars and we’ll visit the village of Cojímar, the setting for Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea.” 

From their we’ll drive back to Havana Vieja and continue our photo walk through the picturesque city, in the late afternoon light.

Body & Movement

Everything is movement, everything is rhythm.

This day is all about movement and rhythm, body and soul, to move and to be moved. We visit the international acclaimed contemporary dance company MALPASO and watch and photograph the dance rehearsal of the group.

During lunch the German photograph Sven Creutzmann, who is living and working since 25 years in Cuba, will give a lecture about Cuba and his photography.

Afterwards we change to an indoor location in Havana Centro of the afro-cuban dance company RAÍCES PROFUNDA and photograph their energetic dance performance and explore individually dance movements after the show with two wonderful dancers.

Photo tour to Trinidad

How to create a picture within a picture

Early in the morning we’ll start our 6-hour drive to Trinidad. Where we also have the great opportunity to discover a more rural part of Cuba with its people.

By mid-afternoon we check into our hotel located in the heart of the old city of Trinidad.

After a relaxing break we set out to explorer the cobbled streets of Trinidad to photograph people and architecture of Trinidad, ending with a sunset photo shoot from the famous bell tower.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy live music at on of the Casa della Trovas, lively local bars.

Trinidad and Playa Ancon

How to make light the subject of your photograph.

Light is not tangible and yet it has a body, a sound. The light takes over telling, but what does it say to you? Yes, it has to be measured – that’s easy – but exposure values ​​do not tell you anything about the “psychology of light”.   We’ll get up early for an early start for a sunrise photography session, and we’ll spend the rest of the day exploring the streets of Trinidad, a truly enchanted city with a warm colonial charm and it is a great opportunity for exploring a more rural part of Cuba.

For those keen, there is an opportunity to venture to Playa Ancon, arguably Cuba’s finest stretch of beach. 

In the evening we go for dinner and enjoy live music at on of the lively Casa de la Trova.

Photo review

Selecting and editing with Lightroom & Photoshop

We’ll leave for Havana in the morning.

After we returned to our casa and we review in the group your photos from the trip and do the final selection and editing with Lightroom & Photoshop.

In the late afternoon we wrap up the masterclass and meet again in the evening for our farewell dinner.
