Cuba is not just unique, but one of the most rewarding photographic and cultural experiences you will ever encounter. Because Cuba is so different it requires an open-minded and rewarding sense of adventure. As is often said in Cuba, “It’s not what you want, it’s what we have”. Prepare yourself to be completely wowed.

Where we stay

Havana – Casa Rosa de Ortega, Casa Colonial Maribi or similar

We spend the night in cosy and comfortable Casas Particulares, typical Cuban guesthouses, where we enjoy Cubans warm hospitality. All rooms have private bathrooms. In the breaks we will use the time to select and edit our pictures and plan our next photo sessions with Joerg’s competent support and teaching.

We require all attending photographers to bring their own cameras (and 1-2 lenses) plus support gear (memory cards, extra batteries, charger, card reader, external hard drive, power adapter, small photo bag, pocket torch, lightweight tripod) We also encourage you to bring your laptop to download your images for review & positive criticism and to edit the images in the postproduction process.

Participants on a daily basis, or one-to one teaching

If you prefer to participate on a daily basis, the basic day fee is 495,- $, without accommodation. Depending of the class and the individual activities, additional fees will compline. As well, if you’re interested in one-to-one teaching lessons, please enquire for availability and possible special arrangements.

Participants make their own air travel arrangements
to arrive in Havana in time.

Once the trip is confirmed, travel details, suggestions,
and tips to help participants travel to Cuba are provided.

*Visas can be purchased at the airport
before departure from your air carrier.

*Visitors to Cuba must also have
proof of valid medical insurance.

Throughout the workshop, Joerg will be there to help and advise you. As we are a small group, you will receive a very personal tuition to ensure that it is suitable for your level, and we can respond spontaneously to individual preferences when they occur. You can expect to learn how to deal with light, how to compose compelling and complex images, how to interact with people. Joerg will explain his photographic vision to you and help you to find and develop your own.

We will be out all day, but back in our hotel there will be the opportunity to revise and analyse your new images and on our last day, we make a final selection and photo editing session and present the images in our workshop group, to review and discuss your experiences.

After the settling in we meet for the first time in the group and go through your equipment and discuss the basic techniques and the conception of our masterclass.

Afterwards we go to dinner where everyone can get to know each other.

Havana Heritage

Instil a powerful narrative in your picture

We start our first photo walk in Havana Vieja, the most authentic and visually impressive part of the city.

There we visit the four main squares of La Habana Vieja; Plaza de La Catedral, Plaza de San Francisco de Assis, Plaza de las Armas and Plaza Vieja.

You will enjoy real moments with the locals while photo walk through the streets, enter houses, workshops and shops on our way.

We visit an American Classic Car restoration garage. Learn first hand how they restore these classic American beauties from the 50’s. This setting makes for some amazing photography.

Afterwards we depart in these beautifully restored classic cars for a drive, and coming back to the center, to the lively Neptuno street, where we continue our photo walk in direction to the Malecòn, to the sunset.

Time to explore Havana’s vibrant nightlife, and make new Cuban friends.

Photo Tour

Enhance the drama by working with strong compositions lines

We enjoy an early morning Photo Tour with Cruiser e-bikes through Vibora, the highest point of Havana, after we cross through Cerro, bustling with real life at the Calle 10 de Octubre, full with exciting photographic opportunities.

We take ferry across Havana bay to Regla. Regla is situated on the southeastern shore of La Habana Bay, with its foundries, petroleum refineries, shipyards, docks, and warehouses.

In Regla we’ll be picked up in vintage American Classic Cars and we’ll visit the village of Cojímar, the setting for Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea.”

From their we’ll drive back to Havana Vieja and continue our photo walk through the picturesque city, in the late afternoon light.

Time to explore Havana’s vibrant nightlife, and make new Cuban friends.

Body & Movement

Everything is movement, everything is rhythm.

This day is all about movement and rhythm, body and soul, to move and to be moved. We visit the international acclaimed contemporary dance company MALPASO and watch and photograph the dance rehearsal of the group.

During lunch the German photograph Sven Creutzmann, who is living and working since 25 years in Cuba, will give a lecture about Cuba and his photography.

Afterwards we change to an indoor location in Havana Centro of the afro-cuban dance company RAÍCES PROFUNDA and photograph their energetic dance performance and explore individually dance movements after the show with two wonderful dancers.

After working with the dancers we go on a photo walk, on the way back to our casa.

Time to explore Havana’s vibrant nightlife, and make new Cuban friends.

Portraits & Figures

Create ambiguity with a blend of natural and artificial light

A great photographer is like a psychologist who knows how to elicit the truth from a patient. To „get“ something from your model, you need to maintain control while gaining his trust. For example, by making your model do something playful, like jumping, painting in the air or holding your breath, you are distracting from the act of photographing.

We portray most diverse people on location and visit an artist in his studio, musicians at their rehearsals, a writer in his home.

We end the day by sharing our experiences, discussing the pictures and learning from them.

Art tour at Fábrica de Arte Cubano, then feel free to stay late for more music and entertainment. Fabrica is one of the most dynamic art/music/nightclub facilities in Havana, Cuba

Work with the silhouette of your subject.

The Quinceañera is an important fest in Cuba, that traditionally young woman celebrate at the age of 15. The core element is a photo shooting with the young girl, where she is posing in different looks idealising her future life.

We will work with two young girls of 15 years together with a Cuban photographer Adrian Legra, who specialised in „Foto de Qunice“ . He will show his technics and explains, how he gets the best out of the young girls. Our location is an old villa in Havana Vedado, where also Rhianna got photographed.

For those keen to go the beach, there is an opportunity to venture to Playa Mi Calito in the afternoon, arguably one of the finest stretch of beach next to Havana.

Havana Jazz Festival Performances, chose among events taking place at several different venues

Photo review

Selecting and editing with Lightroom & Photoshop

We’ll have a free morning and will meet again for lunch at the Cafe Belview in Vedado.

After we returned to our casa and we review in the group your photos from the trip and do the final selection and editing with Lightroom & Photoshop..

In the late afternoon we wrap up the masterclass and meet again in the evening for our farewell dinner.
